Are my annual property tax increases funding quality public education?

We know what a levee is - that's an earthen embankment built along the Mississippi River to keep it from flooding into the bottoms.
But what's a property tax levy?
A property tax levy is imposed on your property by a local taxing district. The total amount is divided among parcels on the basis of assessed values. Visit http://www.ourtaxmoneyofallon.com for more information regarding our local taxation processes.
The vast majority of your property tax bill goes to our local public schools and community college taxing districts - 71 percent on my last tax bill. The rest goes to our county, township, city, and library for services and facilities maintenance.
Below are the property tax levies imposed by our O’Fallon public-school districts:
| Tax Year 2024 | Tax Year 2023 |
|
Taxing District | Payable in 2025 | Payable in 2024 | 1-year % increase |
Central SD 104 | $7,285,408 | $6,998,514 | +4.09% |
OTH SD 203 | $25,564,000 | $22,256,841 | +10.777% |
O’Fallon CCSD 90 | $25,880,537 | $23,441,456 | +10.40% |
Wirepoints is an online magazine devoted to Illinois - taxes, public policy, etc. I highly recommend it. There is a "Kids Can't Read" section on the website that provides a report card on each district. You can look up your own school district. Please note the lack of correlation between our annual tax increases and the amount of your tax dollars being spent per student not adjusted for inflation.
Why are we consistently paying more taxes but spending less per child for education? What needs to change? If you care, please get involved by addressing these questions to your local school boards and state representatives. Demand change.
Here are some sample report cards:
